We're So Impressed By The Koenders Windmill System

I have owned my Koenders Windmill aeration system for only 1 yr but wanted to tell you what a difference it has made to our pond. The pond is about 5 acres and right next to it is our Club house with 2 rifle ranges. Before we installed the windmill the pond always had alot of moss and algae, especially during the summer months. Since we've installed the windmill and put the airstone diffuser into the pond there has been a dramatic improvement in the quality of the water. The moss and algae has nearly disappeared, and the pond looks much healthier. There are different types of fish in the pond that all seem to be healthy and growing well, many of the fish are between 14-20 inches long. Many people have stopped by to comment on how nice the pond looks. We are so impressed by the Koenders Windmill system that we are looking at purchasing another one next year!

I purchased a Koenders Windmill about a year ago and installed it myself. It took me a little while to construct but was completely worthwhile. We required a windmill aeration system because I needed a final project for my high school completion credits. I decided to study the effects that additional amounts of oxygen would have on a stagnated pond that is dear to my heart. The windmill did as expected and within a few months the pond water became clear. Previously the pond's lack of oxygen caused more and more fish to die and we noticed fish floating at the top. Since we installed our Koenders windmill no fish kills have been spotted.

Thanks for the great product - we have owned a Koenders Windmill Aeration System for over 15 yrs. The windmill is primarily used for algae control and to keep our fish healthy during the hot summer months and the cold winters that we get here in Minnisota.

The only maintenance that we have on our windmill is the maintenance repair kit that we change approximately every 4 years. Other than that, this windmill keeps on going.

I want to thank you for the great service that your product has provided us for the last ten years. The product is virtually maintenance free. I have change the diaphragm and check valves a few years ago and that is about it.

It is doing a really wonderful job aerating my pond and keeping my fish healthy and well. We have a very deep pond about an acre in size and I hate to think what my electric bill would have added up to if I was using an electric aeration system to do the same job that our Koenders Windmill Aeration System has been doing for over 10 years.

This windmill aeration system works 365 days a year in harsh winter conditions and in warm hot summers.

7 Years of Reliability

I have been using your products for the last 7 years and am very impressed with the reliability, durability and functionality of both your windmill aeration system and your electric aeration system (EL2).

They both operate on the same diaphragm based air compression system and that has proven to be very effective in aerating my 3 acre fish and swimming pond.

We rely on our pond for save recreation for family and friends during the hot summer months and in order to ensure this happens we want to avoid the growth of algae and weeds in the pond. A combination of the Koenders windmill and the electric aeration has proven to be great. When the wind is not blowing the electric aeration is working and when the wind is blowing then we have both the electric and the windmill aeration working. By using the wind we have cut our operating costs of aerating our pond in half.

The windmill has been maintenance free for 7 years and we have not done a thing to it. the electric aerator works constantly. Considering the usage we are surprised that after more than 5 years of constant use that we have only had to replace a drive belt and a diaphragm on the system - less than $ 100.00.

Koenders Windmills Last Forever

Our Koenders Windmill has been aerating our pond for more than 15 years. We have a relatively small and deep pond about 1/4 acre in size. Its a fish pond that is stocked with trout.

The windmill aeration system by Koenders Windmill has kept the pond water clean and healthy for the fish so as to avoid Fish Kill. It also limits and prevents algae and weeds from growing in the pond.

During the winter I position the air diffuser at the side of the pond. This keeps an area of the pond open at the edge which attracts deer to the pond and other wild life. The only other thing that we have done to this windmill up until this year is grease the swivel tube under the compressor which makes the compressor swivel easier at the top of the tower.

This year we are changing the diaphragm and check valves for about $50.00 - that's pretty good for 15 years of good use out of an aeration system. Nothing holds up like a Koenders Windmill.

Koenders Windmills Keep Pond Water OPEN to Avoid Fish Kill

Thanks for a great product - we installed two of your Koenders Windmills over 8 years ago and they are doing a great job keeping two of our ponds healthy and clean. During the winter they are extremely useful, even in 30 below freezing temperatures - each windmill keeps anywhere from a 10-20 Ft hole in the ice all winter long.

We do not have to chop at the ice to vent it from any toxic gases being released from decomposing sludge at the bottom of the pond and it even gives us a nice fishing hole to fish from. The ice in the rest of the pond stays about 1.5-2 Ft thick but we do not ever go close to the edge of the holes. We have never had a fish kill since installing these windmills.

The reason we went with your windmill aeration systems in the first place is because we do not have any power outlets close to the ponds. I am certainly glad of that - these windmills have cost us nothing to operate for years and they have outlasted all the electric aerator systems that any of my friends have bought over the years.

Customer Satisfaction

Koenders aeration systems have been keeping our Retention pond clean for 10 years. We have done nothing on it until recently when we replaced the maintenance repair kit.

The water comes off the buildings and large parking lots through ditches gathering into the retention area near the building. We originally installed the aeration system to ensure the pond does not stagnate. We wanted to eliminate odors and breeding of mosquitoes especially now due to the risk of west nile virus. We are extremely happy with our Koenders aeration system.

I love my Koenders Windmill

We bought a Koenders Windmill last year and truly love it. It was easy to install, taking two of us about a day to assemble and set up the diffusers in the pond. Our pond used to be covered with filamentous algae throughout the summer months. Ever since we installed the windmill aeration system - we no longer have any issues.

It is keeping our pond and fish healthy and alive. The pond is 8 Ft deep
and we can now see right down to the bottom of the pond. I am extremely proud of my pond and the super great product from Koenders Windmills.

I will be installing another Koenders WIndmill on our other 5 acre pond to keep our fish alive this winter. We had a major fish kill last year and do not want this same thing to happen again this winter.

Windmill survives Hurricane Juan

Dear Koenders Windmills,

Thought you may like this story about how durable your windmill is. I installed your windmill 8 years ago and it has been incredibly strong. It battles enormously strong winds all year long but nothing compared to the Hurricane Juan that hit the east coast 6 years ago. After that storm, to my surprise, the Koenders Windmill was still standing and working.

I know that you set customer expectations at every 4-6 years to change the diaphragm and check valves. Well it has been 8 years and the pump is still compressing air on the original diaphragm.

I wanted to thank you for the great product that you build. I have owned a Koenders Windmill Aeration System for 10 years now and have had absolutely no problems or issues at all. The only maintenance that I have done on it so far is change the check valves a few years ago. ($ 20.00)

The windmill works during all four seasons of the year- even during the really the hot summers and the cold winters. In the summer it provides my fish with additional levels of oxygen to keep them healthy and avoid fish kill. In the winter it keeps the pond open so that the fish remain alive in the cold winter months as well.

I just can't imagine what I would have spent in electricity over the last 10 years to aerate this pond if it was not for Koenders Free Air Windmills.

Wind Energy-Why the Koender's Compressor design is the Best in the Industry!!

1) Koenders has 20 years experience in developing a balance of blade and piston -diaphragm size to ensure the most optimal, tested and proven design for maximum performance under varying wind conditions.

2) It has been proven beyond a doubt that the diaphragm size to blade surface ratio must be such that the system aerates with the perfect balance of excellent aeration performance without stalling.

3)The Koenders design balances the benefits of excellent air volumes at the high wind speeds as well as providing extended hours of low wind speed performance without stalling. This blade size to compressor size balance maximizes effective pond aeration and system reliability.

4) The amount of aeration achieved depends on a few critical things. The depth of the airstone diffuser in the pond water will reflect the amount of "back pressure" on the compressor (one pound per square inch of pressure for every 2 Ft of water depth).

5) Larger diaphragm - the more air one can expect? In theory this sounds like it would be advantageous. Only if larger horsepower demands can be met with a larger diaphragm produce more air, and only an increase of wind speed or blade surface will satisfy this demand. When larger horsepower demands are not met, a windmill either stops or slows down. This over demand of available horsepower will shorten actual windmill running times which reduces the overall aeration program and results in a loss of air production not a gain.

6) An analogy would be that of the gearing of a bicycle; If a bicycle does not have the option of multiple gears, the designer must choose a gear ratio which will satisfy, hill climbing, level riding and descents or----low winds, moderate winds,and high winds.

7) Another negative condition created by the over sizing of the piston or diaphragm is the increased force on the connecting rod, bearings and other windmill related components. A 7 inch diameter piston-diaphragm with a system back pressure of 10 PSI will require 384 lbs of force each stroke of the piston, while a 10 inch diameter piston-diaphragm will increase that force to 785 lbs! Think of the design changes to the crankshaft, bearings,connecting rod etc... that a manufacturer must allow for approximately 25 PSI on a 10 inch diameter piston-diaphragm which would equal a full ton of force(2000 lbs).

When considering buying a windmill aeration system make sure that the design of any units are thought through in all aspects-most copy cat products have only changes specific components of the windmill aeration systems and failed to totally engineer all components-so the integrity, reliability, performance and endurance of the unit is not validated. For example, a larger diaphragm diameter will not be effective in the field unless the rest of the system has been sized to match and with stand the forces that will be stressed on the windmill.

With Koenders we have the single diaphragm and dual diaphragm windmill aeration systems-both units use our 7 inch diaphragm an illustration of the integrity of our design. The dual diaphragm windmill aeration system pumps double the amount of air compared to our single diaphragm windmill at relatively the same wind speeds.

Thought you might like to have some feedback re your 12 foot windmill and
compressor.

I finally got around to unpacking the units and found the assembly to be relativily easy ... as long as one reads the instructions.

Mind you who ever heard of a customer doing that eh?

The instruction Tips were great and saved alot of heartache.

Once assembled and tested in out backyard we moved it up to our bushlot and put it in it's new home.

I am pleased to say all is working very well.

It is a very nicely designed unit.

You guys are to congratulated.

I look forward to getting a second unit only this time with the pump attachment ... but must dig the well first ... or so my wife says.

Windmill - A Huge Asset

Our windmill is a huge asset to our farm and the fish certainly appreciate the additional oxygen in the pond.

The Koenders windmill was erected in August of 2002. We get some unobstructed high winds coming across the open alfalfa fields where I live, which is very flat terrain to begin with.

Actually, we've been very happy with the windmill, which adds both functionality and class to our estate. One of the photos attached has the erect windmill staged against the sunset in November, quite beautiful.

Thanks for the great quality windmill product that you have built and supplied to me. We have had our Koenders Windmill Aeration System for 10 years and not had one minutes problem with it. Each year we grease the top of the cone and that is it.

Wishing you all the best for your 20th anniversary. I can understand by the quality of your product how you can be in business for this long.

I have been a Koenders customer for 11 years. My windmill aeration system has kept my pond clean and healthy for all these years. I remember back then a local representative from another company was trying to sell me on an electric aerator. It was going to cost me triple the cost of what the windmill was, taking into account the electric cable that I would have needed to run.

My windmill is 500 ft from my pond and I simply run airline to the pond from where the windmill is situated. I have never had any issues with my windmill or any costs. I am sure my electrical operating costs would have been astronomical for the electric aerator after all these many years.

We installed our windmill aeration system in our pond about a year ago to cut
down on pond algae and weeds. We had no idea that it would do such an
effective job of reducing the amount of muck at the bottom of our pond.

Within 7 months of having our windmill installed we saw a dramatic decrease in
the amount of sludge. Initially there was about 3 Ft of loose sediment and
now after aerating we are down to less than a foot.

I installed my windmill in 2001 and it has been extremely reliable and critical in keeping my pond open during the winter months. I use my pond for supplying me with bait fish for when I go up the Allegheny River to fish.

The windmill aeration system keeps my 50 X 150 Ft pond clean and fresh so that my bait fish stay alive and well. Not one bit of problem with my Koenders Windmill - it has lived up to all my expectations and has even exceeded them.

Just a quick note to thank you for a extremely reliable product. We have had 3 of your Koenders Windmills aerating our various ponds for up to 8 years.

We use them to aerate our water in the summer to help keep the ponds clean. During the winter months they are used to keep areas of our ponds open. We get ice as thick as 5 FT on the pond and the windmills are able to keep open areas in the pond if with these extreme conditions. We thought this would be impossible to do but Koenders has proved themselves.

The first year we installed these windmills their was massive fish kill in the region, however, our windmills managed to save our fish.

I have been a proud owner of a Koenders Windmill Aeration System for 7 years and it has worked flawlessly. During the cold winters it keeps my pond open and fish healthy. Even when regional ponds have in the past reported severe fish kill - during a few of the more severe winters that we have experienced in the last decade our pond had none.

During the hot summer months our Koenders Windmill, that by the way only needs a surprisingly low wind speed to operate of around 5 MPH, has kept our pond free of algae. Happy to report that we have never had the pond turnover in the hot summer months either unlike other ponds around Ohio.

After 7 years I am simply changing the rubber diaphragm and check valves that is $39.95 as part of a maintenance repair kit that you offer.

The Power of Koenders Windmills

Dear Koenders,

We have been a Koenders Windmill customer for 15 years and have used your windmills to areate two of our ponds. One pond happens to be 60 acres in size and the other is 16 acres.

We installed 4 of your windmills on the large pond and 2 on the smaller pond. The purpose of these windmills are primarily to keep areas of each pond open during the winter months. This ensures the health and survival of our fish. Some of our Bass are as large as 6-8 lbs in size.

Some winters, the windmills were able to keep as much as half the surface area of each pond open. Keeping these areas open provides the needed sunlight and oxygen for the fish to survive in the pond. In 2001, the winter was so severe that all the ponds in our region had devastating fish kills except ours. In that Spring, we did a shore assessment of our winter kill damage - pleased to report that we did not lose one fish that winter.

We are so happy with the Koenders products that we just placed an order for 2 more Dual Diaphragm Windmill Aeration Systems. I would be happy to speak with any customers who are looking at buying one of your windmills.

Low Maintenance Windmill Aerator

I installed my Koenders Windmill Aerator over 6 years ago and up until this week have not done an ounce of maintenance on it. It has been keeping our pond nice and clean and been extremely reliable. With no problem, it has kept our pond open in the cold winter months and the fish alive. We have also never had any issues with pond algae or weeds. Installing this right when we built our pond was the way to go.

I am now simply ordering a maintenance repair kit for $39.95 - that I was told would need replacing every 5-7 years, right on schedule... well done Koenders.

Windmills to Improve Water

A Regina-based company has quietly become the world leader in using windmills to aerate stagnant or poor - quality water.

Koenders Windmills Ltd. was founded almost 20 years ago, based on the vision of a man named Wilf Koenders, who pioneered the use of wind power in rural Saskatchewan as a power source to force air into bodies of stagnant or poor-quality water, such as ponds, sloughs or fish ponds.

More conventional aeration systems use electrical or other types of power to operate the system that injects the air into water.

Leader-Post / Cal Murrison, president of Koenders Windmills, already sells windmills to U.S. customers and is hoping to expand that market worldwide. The windmills are good for aerating stagnant or poor-quality water.

Cal Murrison, the president of Koenders Windmills, said he first became familiar with the Koenders concept because his own father, a farmer, was one of the first customers when Koenders Windmills started coming out.

Murrison himself moved off the farm and into Regina where he was involved in the construction business for many years.

A few years ago when the opportunity to buy into the Koenders business, in conjunction with business partners, came up, Murrison decided he wasn't initially very interested.

"(But) I ended up being intrigued by the process and what it did, so I ended up taking it on," Murrison said.

Murrison said he sometimes reflects on the importance of good-quality water when he looks at cars filling up at the gas pumps just across the street from the Koenders offices, near the corner of Saskatchewan Drive and Elphinstone Street.

Today, many people are concerned about having enough gas, oil and other energy to power the world's economy, he noted. But people need to reflect on the importance of water, particularly good-quality water, for the health and even the survival of the human race because, Murrison said, "water is the most important thing in the world."
The Koenders business has grown over the years, Murrison said. While only 14 windmill aeration devices were sold in the first year, Murrison said the company has sold as many as 6,000 in peak years.

But he declined to get into details about how exactly sales have been going recently, although he said the company is continuing to sell plenty of windmills. He concedes that various developments, including the rising value of the Canadian dollar has put pressure on the company's ability to sell products in the U.S. and make money.

"That doesn't help us," he said.

The typical windmill-aeration system costs anywhere from $1,100 to $2,000, Murrison said. Using an example, Murrison said the company may at one time have sold a windmill in the States for $800 US, which worked out $1,100 or $1,200 in Canadian funds.

But a $800 sale in the U.S. these days doesn't amount to much more than $800 in Canadian money, Murrison said.

"We miss that $400 difference," Murrison said.

The company has adjusted its pricing structure and business plan to take into account the higher Canadian dollar, Murrison said.

Koenders employs 15 people. While the head office is in Regina, the windmills are built at a plant at Englefeld, east of Saskatoon.

Looking to the future, Murrison said the company is working on further developing a business relationship with John Deere that could greatly enhance marketing Koenders Windmills worldwide.
