Fish Kill
Fish kill to a certain extent is natures way of getting rid of the sick and weak fish. However, if you start seeing larger than normal levels of fish washing up on the side of your pond then you may have a serious issue. The number one cause for Fish Kills is the depletion of oxygen within a pond's waters.
Fish kills due to lack of oxygen in a pond will most often occur in the really hot months of Summer or Cold months of Winter.
In the hot summer months, the levels of oxygen in the pond are reduced because of the higher amounts of decaying dead plant material which tends to be more active during this time of year.
Pond algae is usually more predominant in the hot summer months as well. A certain amount of Algae in a pond is said to be healthy for it can produce food for pond inhabitants. When there is an overabundance of Pond Algae then the sun light cannot penetrate through the water's surface to reach the plants who in turn create oxygen through the process of photosynthesis.
In the cold winter months the lack of oxygen in the water is usually caused by snowpack on top of the ice. This ice build up limits penetration of sunlight to photosynthesize plants within the pond.
Fish stressed from low oxygen levels, can frequently be observed gulping for air at the pond surface. An extremely cost effective way to prevent Fish Kill is Pond Aeration.
By aerating your water you will be injecting oxygen into your pond to help increase the level of dissolved oxygen.

Pond Stagnation
Pond Stagnation is one of the most common problems afflicting small ponds and lakes. Stagnation occurs when pond waters have no inflow of other fresh water sources or circulation.
Pond stagnation is generally characterized by low oxygen levels and temperature stratification of the water, which is extremely unhealthy for fish populations and can aid in the growth of unwanted algae and other pond vegetation.
Pond stagnation also acts as prime breeding grounds for insects and mosquitoes. Circulating water prevents an environment where insects and mosquito larvae can incubate and hatch. Limiting the ability for mosquitoes to hatch can control the mosquito population and reduce the chances of west nile virus.
One of the best and most cost effective ways to circulate water in your pond and prevent pond stratification, stagnation and algae growth is to install an
aeration system.
There are two types of Pond aeration systems; Bottom Up aeration and Surface Mount Aeration. A bottom up aeration system is 5-10 times more effective then surface aeration systems such as fountains.
Pond Aeration systems provide Koi and every other kind of fish with additional levels of oxygen in the water to ensure they remain healthy as the temperatures and seasons change. Overall pond health and freshness will dramatically improve with the addition of an aeration system.
