Windmills Prevent Pond Freezing

Question:

Can the Windmill Aeration System keep the pond water open from freezing?

Just wanted to ask for your advice, relative to you the new 20 foot Windmill that I have purchased and installed etc. It all seems to be working great, but my intention was for it to agitate the water enough to prevent a section of the pond from freezing and allowing my daughters pet ducks to have a spot all year long etc. I live in central Iowa, and put the windmill on top of a hill in an open field with tons of exposure etc. The diffuser is in about 13 feet of water.

Answer:

Hi Don,

I hope someone has already replied and answered your question. If not, our objective with the airstone is to bring the 50 degree water from the bottom of the pond to the top of the pond, which usually keeps the ice from totally freezing. Surface agitation alone is not enough, especially if we drop down below 10 degrees or so.

Hope that this has worked in our recent cold weather!

Cool, I really appreciate your response. It was informative and positive. Since the origin of this message, we have had some extreme cold and guess what? Bet you don't have to guess, right the windmill was working fine and kept the water open so far!

Thanks,
